Sharp Money Explained

Sharp money refers to bets placed by professional or highly-informed bettors. When sharps move, lines follow. Understanding this signal is one of the most powerful edges in MLB betting.

Sharps vs. Squares

Sports bettors fall into two broad groups:

  • Sharps (professionals) — bet large amounts based on deep research, models, and insider knowledge. They win long-term.
  • Squares (recreational) — bet smaller amounts on popular teams, home favorites, and games they watched on TV. They lose long-term.

Sportsbooks adjust their lines based on who is betting and how much. When sharps act, lines move — and that movement is a signal you can read.

Money% vs. Tickets%

Most major sports data providers track two key numbers for each side of a bet:

Tickets%% of total bets placed on each side
Money%% of total dollars wagered on each side

The gap between these two numbers reveals who is betting big.

Example: Team A has 35% of tickets but 68% of the money.
→ A small number of large bets went on Team A. Those are sharps.

Why Sharp Action Moves Lines

Sportsbooks respect sharp money. When a known professional or syndicate places a large bet, the book adjusts its line to limit exposure. This creates line movement you can track.

Reverse Line Movement (RLM)

The most powerful sharp signal is when the line moves against public opinion:

  • Public is 75% on Team A
  • The line moves to make Team A a bigger underdog (more expensive)
  • → Sharps hammered Team B, forcing the book to adjust

How Our AI Uses Sharp Data

Our Sharp/Public layer (worth up to 20 points out of 100) scores each game based on:

  • Money% vs tickets% divergence on the pick side
  • Direction and speed of line movement
  • Reverse line movement signals
  • Historical edge of sharp-favored sides in similar spots

A pick with 80%+ money but only 40% tickets on the AI-favored side gets near-maximum marks on this layer. Combined with pitching and situational data, these picks become our highest-confidence selections.

Limitations of Sharp Money

Sharp signals are powerful but not foolproof. A few cautions:

  • Even the best sharps win ~55–58% of games long-term
  • Data can be delayed or incomplete on some books
  • Sharps sometimes hedge or steam chase — creating false signals
  • Sharp action on one platform doesn't always reflect the whole market

This is why we combine sharp data with 5 other analysis layers rather than relying on it alone.

Every pick our AI generates includes a Sharp $% rating showing how much professional money is on the recommended side.
